Fantastic Tavern
  • A New Beginning

The Fantastic Tavern was founded by Matthew Bagwell, EMC Consulting's global Creative Director, on February 19th, 2009.
  • A Passionate Exploration

The idea was to create a community of like-minded people who share an interest in interactivity, design and culture and are willing to explore and debate various themes.
  • Growing in Popularity

On our opening evening, 41 people turned up at the George in London. Two years later, the community is over 500 people strong and the Taverners (as we are known) have met every two months since.
  • Hot Topics

While we don't take ourselves too seriously, we have covered significant themes to our industry. We've debated the merits of the Twitter effect, challenged the role of optimisation techniques versus the creative, explored emerging trends and deep dived into total experience, augmented reality and the cloud.

  • Smart Meter Greater Control

    Greater Control

Smart Meter is an application that gives the home user better control and understanding of their energy and utility use. This allows the consumer to resource their energy in a more efficient and cost effective way.
  • Smart Meter A Smaller Footprint

    A Smaller Footprint

The user has complete control of their energy use through the application, as well as other digital devices such as their mobile phone. Key drivers that help the user to reduce their energy use include reduction of carbon footprint and earning green points.
  • Smart Meter Intelligent Information

    Intelligent Information

The application provides a detailed breakdown of images over a period of time. It highlights self-generated energy and predicts future use based on current usage. Consumers can also view their statements and change their tariff.
  • Smart Meter Enriching the Experience

    Enriching the Experience

The above image represents a 3D interactive environment, giving you a breakdown of device usage within each room, and by energy type. The user can zoom and expand into each area, and interact with devices like a washing machine to discover more about the appliances energy output.
  • Smart Meter Valuable Feedback

    Valuable Feedback

The consumer can receive advice on device usage, for example if they use energy at peak times they'll receive information letting them know what tariff is more suitable for their use.
  • Shouting out for Simplicity

Customer focus groups told Tesco that they needed a grocery site that was inspirational, quick and simple to navigate – just like their local superstore. They also wanted a site that would help them make the most of their money.
  • Adding Inspiration

It's felt that the weekly grocery shop is a chore. However, the introduction of 'zone' areas meant Tesco were able to inject more inspirational ideas, products and copy to help customers get more out of their time on the site. It also encouraged customers to spend more time online.
  • Relevance

As 90% of customers on tesco.com shop from their favourites area, tools such as filtering and sorting made shopping from this section far easier, and through the use of special featured areas the Tesco team could show customers the most relevant deals within each shelf, aisle or department.
  • Creating a New Experience

This realisation led us to create Tesco@Home; a new, best-of-breed grocery shopping experience built in Microsoft Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). This prototype was designed and built based on the requirements of the Head of Grocery web development team and the Head of Innovation from tesco.com.
  • Fit for the Whole Family

The user is kept up-to-date with To Do lists, deliveries and special offers. The application was designed to be more than just a shopping site and much more like a hub for the whole family, where they could plan activities and meals together, search for recipes or alternatively just leave notes and reminders for each other.
